OPEN THREAD: Focal Points

I’ve often thought about what, in addition to Old Town, Monrovia could create as a focal point for visitors and local residents to enjoy. If I could choose anything, it would be a lake with walking trails around it. Land being at a premium, I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

What do you think would be a nice focal point for the city? A fountain? A fantastic building? A waterslide?

the lake idea sounds great. since size is a problem, how about a pond instead?

I love the lake idea too. For now, I’m just hoping they do a good job with Library Park AND actually maintain it.

Open and Spaces and green spaces are something we need more of in general. Weekdays aren’t so bad, but weekends and evenings some of our parks are a bit overfilled at times.

A focal point would be nice. A nice park, water features that would contribute to recharging our groundwater supply would be nice. I can think of more than a few places we could put it to help take the edge of density and keep better separation between residential and business.

    1. The Library
I wish they had restored the library and made it a focal point of mid-century modern architecture, which is trendier than craftsman or Spanish! Some contractor must have funded the campaign for a new library.

    2. New office building? Phooey. Not a focal point.
I also deplore the billboard image of the new building someone has planned for the corner of Huntington and Myrtle. It is cold and forbidding and will do nothing for those of us who live here.

Why not an open-air mercado with a grassy play area for kids and picnics? Live mariachi every Sunday. Dog shows, art fairs, rose growing contests…

Not a cold fortress for the corporations! Isn’t Huntington soulless enough east of Myrtle?

    3. The Walkable City?
Hmmmm, that would mean putting in sidewalks north of Foothill, and that would cost money, but all our money is going to the library we so badly needed because we didn’t have one…oh, we did? Well, it may not matter to city officials that one woman from my street was killed by a car while walking on Mountain Ave. And perhaps it won’t matter when it (almost certainly) happens again. But it matters a lot to me and to her family. Shame on Monrovia for squandering money on the library we didn’t need.
