ANNOUNCEMENT: Monrovia Whistler could become World Champion

Posted June 23, 2008 in Announcements, Wacky Fun

Local Monrovian Carole Anne Kaufman is more than just your average, er, way-above-average, hairdresser. She can make you laugh, and, will make your jaw fall open with her ability to whistle just about any tune, even classical.

A recent write-up in the Pasadena weekly sums it up:

The 35-year-old Monrovia native will compete in the International Whistlers Convention’s championships in Tokyo in July. A hair stylist, stand-up comedienne, ordained minister and self-proclaimed “lip balm-aholic,” Kaufman added award-winning whistler to her array of titles six years ago after a friend suggested that she enter a local competition.

“At first I was excited about the idea, and I thought, ‘maybe I’ll do it,’” Kaufman recalled. “Later I wanted to back out, but I was too embarrassed to face my [hairdressing] clients if I didn’t go through with it.”

Kaufman tied for first place in that competition and has since placed first and second runner-up in the International Whistler’s Convention’s championships in 2005 and 2007, respectively. But more than her victories, Kaufman remembers these competitions for the people she met.

She would love to put Monrovia on the map by whistling her way to world champion, and to do so she is organizing a bit of a going-away soirée nee fundraiser on Saturday June, 28th from 6-10 p.m. at L.A. Party Works at 235 West Maple Avenue here in Monrovia.

Admission is only $10, and inside you will find a ton of stuff to keep you entertained: pencil drawing, live performances, reflexology, psychic readings, lots of drinks and munchies, and if you’re lucky, she might even whistle for you!

For more information, call Carole Anne at 626-358-5822 or email her.

ADDENDUM: She won!!

ANNOUNCEMENT: Meeting Thursday for Foothill Extension

Posted April 22, 2008 in Announcements, Construction, Events, Foothill Extension Tagged , , , , , ,

Foothill Extension

Sure, you’d like to see the train station go in soon…so to help make that happen attend the MTA’s next board meeting on Thursday the 24th at 9:30 a.m. at and show your support. The meeting will be held at MTA Headquarters (board room), One Gateway Plaza in Los Angeles.

Remember, this is not a done deal yet, as the Foothill extension has not been allocated as part of the budgeted 30-year regional plan. It’s currently still floundering in the list of “Strategic Projects” which means that it will likely be built only when “funds become available.”

This will be an opportunity for supporters of the Foohill Extension to speak directly to board members during the public comment period (1 minute maximum). The MTA Building is located adjacent to Union Station downtown, which is reachable from the Sierra Madre station in about 35 minutes. For more information, please call 626-305-7026 or visit the website at and register.

To make your support known through email, send your thoughts to metroplan@metro.net. For more complete information, download the PDF here. You may also sign the “I WILL RIDE” student petition here.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Relay for Life this weekend

Posted in Announcements, Critters, Events, Old Town

The Relay For Life of Monrovia April 26 11a.m. thru April 27 11a.m. at Recreation Park in Monrovia. The Relay For Life is a 24 hour event where the community celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those we’ve lost to cancer, and continues to fight back for a cure.

Monrovia Relay is a bit different than most other Relays because they not only honor humans effected by cancer, but pets, too. White Luminaria bags are for humans and lavender for pets. Dog survivors will walk during the Survivor’s Victory Lap and they will receive a special gift as will the human survivors.

Two Dogs Petsitting has teamed up with Dog Paddle Wellness, CM Surgical Specialty Group, Eye Care For Animals, Royal Oaks Equestrian Farm, twenty something Magazine, and Carole Anne Kaufman’s Studio C Hair Artistry and raised over $5,000 so far.

If you are available the weekend of April 26th and would like to join in the celebration, remembrance, and fight…Two Dogs Paws Pettsitting would love to have you on their team! The commitment is minimal (only 30-60 minutes!) and you are sure to have a fantastic time. Here is the link to check out the event schedule or sign up for the team.

You do not have to raise money or ask anyone for anything…if your friends or family (dogs included) are interested in hanging out while you walk, sign them up, too, and we’ll make sure you all have a great time! If you do raise or donate $100, you will receive a Relay 08 t-shirt…but definitely not required.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Classic Car Cruise in Monrovia Saturday

Posted April 4, 2008 in Announcements

I know there are many classic and antique car aficionados in Monrovia, as I see them around quite often. I thought it would be appropriate to post a notice for the “Monrovia Station Cruise,” which will be held at the park and ride lot near the old train station from 4–8 p.m. on Saturday, April 5th.

In addition to providing selling space for $10 (no dealers), there will be food and a raffle, and a $100 “Best in Show” prize.

Organizers plan on holding the event regularly on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month. For more information, call 626-359-5511.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Monrovia VFW Post To Honor Blue Star Families

Posted February 22, 2008 in Announcements

I drive by the VFW Post all the time. I don’t qualify to go in, but I’m happy to help them get their information out.

Arcadia-Monrovia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2070, based in Monrovia, has announced plans to honor so-called “Blue Star Families” – the parents and siblings of service members currently in uniform. The First Blue Star Dinner will be held February 29, at Post 2070 in Monrovia, and will honor the local loved ones of soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen currently serving, whether at home or abroad.

The term “Blue Star Families” refers to flags that families flew during World War II that marked homes with loved ones in service. Today, the City of Monrovia honors its military families with blue star banners on major streets.

The free dinner is being sponsored by Post 2070, with significant donations from the Monrovian Family Restaurant and Rudy’s Mexican Food of Monrovia plus Paco’s Mexican Restaurant of Arcadia. However, the Post is still seeking additional donations to make the event complete.

Families of currently serving military personnel from the Arcadia, Monrovia and Duarte area who would like to attend should RSVP to VFW2070@gmail.com. RSVPs are mandatory, though the event is free to Blue Star Families. Businesses who are interested in lending support can use the same email address.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Colorado Commons Models Open Feb 23

The long-awaited Colorado Commons townhomes in Old Town Monrovia will be available for viewing on Saturday, Feb. 23.

The floorplans span up to 2,133 square feet and include one to three bedrooms and one to two and a half baths. Homebuyers aren’t the only ones who are excited about experiencing the models for the first time; future homeowners at Colorado Commons are equally thrilled. Priscilla Harris has literally watched Colorado Commons being built from the ground upright from her own backyard. She says she can’t wait to move into her one bedroom flat in March. “I’ve been excited about this community from the very beginning,” said Harris, a long-time Monrovia resident. “I’m dying to move in. It’s absolutely gorgeous inside and out. I’ve never seen another community like this before, especially not in Southern California.”

Virtual tours are also available online at livecoloradocommons.com.
